HELEN KELLY

Feature Documentary (92’)

An intimate, inspirational portrait of Helen Kelly in the last year of her life.

Together tells the story of a woman whose advocacy and generosity changed the lives of countless New Zealanders.

Upon being diagnosed with cancer in 2015, Helen Kelly resigned as president of the Council of Trade Unions but did not stop working for the people and causes she believed in.

Filmmaker Tony Sutorius followed Kelly through the last year of her life as she worked with the families of the Pike River miners, those whose loved ones were killed in workplace accidents and others, all while undergoing aggressive cancer treatment.

Along the way Kelly found herself becoming an advocate for the use of medical cannabis, something that became essential as she battled her disease. Her informed support for change played a role in last year’s referendum.

Together perfectly captures Kelly, demonstrating her generosity, her commitment to giving a voice to the most vulnerable members of society and her unflinching ability to stand up for them to those in power.
